TRUE Clarity: The difference between burnout and flow

Why Clarity is the first step to sustainable peak performance and how to create effortless momentum towards your goals.

Rhys embodied all the hallmarks of success — a relentless work ethic, unwavering discipline, and ironclad willpower.

On paper, he was a successful entrepreneur, running four cafes in the most competitive coffee market in the world — Melbourne.

In reality, he felt like a prisoner of his own business, working 10-hour days, 7 days a week — with no profit, no freedom, and no time for the people he loved.

He wasn't short on effort — he was drowning in it. Not from a lack of ability — but from a lack of clarity.

Rhys was climbing the wrong mountain entirely, and no amount of hustle would get him where he actually wanted to go.

Because without REAL clarity — scaling becomes a grind with no end in sight. Where MORE effort — only takes you further in the wrong direction.

I've seen countless founders burn out chasing the wrong goals down the wrong path — and Rhys was hurtling towards the same destination: burnout.

Clarity isn’t just about having clear goals, a vision board, or some 10-year plan.

It’s a high-definition image that reflects your true nature — rooted in your values, passions, purpose, and the way your brain is uniquely wired to thrive.

Your level of clarity shapes where you’re headed, how you get there, IF you get there — and whether the journey feels like an exciting adventure or a soul-crushing slog.

Because when that image in your mind is missing, blurry, or not actually yours — the journey becomes an uphill battle against yourself.

So… which of these three journeys are you on right now?

NO Clarity

This is where you have no image in your mind whatsoever — or you’ve got the wrong image entirely.

When you have ‘no image’ — you’re working hard and keeping busy — but unsure what you’re actually working towards, or why… Growth for the sake of growth may provide momentary satisfaction, but chasing empty goals leaves you feeling tired, unfulfilled, and like you’re on a treadmill heading nowhere.

When you have the ‘wrong image’ — scaling feels like you're forcing a square peg (you!) through a round hole, blocking yourself from flow.

Although you have a high-definition image with your goals, roadmap and a step-by-step plan laid out — you're following someone else’s version of success that's not your own. That YouTuber you follow? Those books you read? That coaching program you did? They’re showing you their path to their version of success.

And it’s very unlikely that their framework for success aligns with your true nature and the way you are wired to perform at your best.

BLOCKED Clarity

This is where you have a vague idea of what you're working towards — “more time, money and freedom" — but you're unsure how to make your dreams a reality.

There's a voice that keeps asking:

🤨“Is this what I’m meant to be doing?”

🤔“Should I be focusing on something else?”

😟“Is this even going to work?”

Because your image is blurry — you spread yourself thin.

You try everything. You pivot constantly. You second-guess every decision. And you waste precious time and energy on the wrong things.

Because moving in any direction — feels better than not moving at all

Sure, you're making progress — but the journey is so much slower, harder and more draining than it should be.

Without TRUE clarity — you can't prioritise what really matters, so even your best efforts eventually lead to burnout. Because you can’t align with what you can't fully see or understand. So aspects of your life and business fall out of alignment with your true nature, which blocks your flow, dulls your mojo, and stifles momentum.

If you continue to scale without true clarity, you will get pulled further and further out of alignment. I’ve seen it happen hundreds of times over.

If you’re one of the lucky ones — you’ll survive the multiple burnouts and fractured relationships with loved ones— and eventually exit your business for a shitload of money…

Of the 400 or so “lucky ones” I’ve helped exit over the past decade:

  • 95% suffered multiple burnouts on their journey, and

  • 80% felt “empty” and “unfulfilled” when they reached their destination.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. Not when you gain TRUE Clarity, embrace your true nature, and design a path that aligns with the way you’re wired 💫

TRUE Clarity

True clarity means knowing what you want, why it matters, and how to get there — in a way that works for you, rather than against you.

It’s understanding your true nature; your values, your passions, your purpose, and how your brain is wired to thrive. Not just on a cognitive level — but on a somatic level.

You don’t just think it — you feel it. In your gut, in your chest, and in your bones. Acting in alignment with your true nature becomes intuitive.

This level of clarity gives you the power to align your outer world with your true nature.

Where you STOP being controlled by your external conditioning and your external environment — and START designing your life and business to match your unique cognitive wiring.

That’s when the grind begins to fall away.

You stop relying on grit, discipline, or sheer willpower to inch towards your goals. You no longer need to chase, force, or hack your way into flow.

That’s when momentum becomes effortless.

You start following the energy — and allow yourself to get pulled into flow. Where work feels like play, flow becomes your default state of being, and your mojo leads the way 🦦✨

TRUE Clarity in action

Does this sound like idealistic fluff to you?

Here’s a snapshot of how Rhys used the Flowjo Formula to flip the script in his business and personal life 💛

A quick snapshot of Rhys's before and after portfolio outcome
A quick snapshot of Rhys's before and after portfolio outcome

When Rhys and I started working together, he already knew he wanted more “time, money and freedom.”

Me: “What does the top of your mountain actually look like?”

Rhys: “A profitable business, with lots of time and freedom to raise a family and enjoy life with the people I love.”

But like many of us who’ve been conditioned to follow the “Hero’s Journey” — Rhys believed the only way to reach the summit was to grit through the suffering and continue his slow and painful ascent to the top…

Me: “How do you plan to get there?”

Rhys: “Keep grinding for a few more years, grow the business to a size where I can afford to hire a general manager, and take a step back”.

I noticed there was more doubt than conviction in his voice, so I pressed him further:

Me: “How confident do you feel about that plan?”

Rhys: “.........................”

That question cracked him wide open — and he began to cry.

Because deep down, he already knew.

He knew that doing more of the same would lead to the same outcome: burnout.

He knew that even if he tripled sales revenue, he wouldn’t be any closer to living the life he actually wanted.

He knew that pushing, forcing, and willing himself to the top was only going to pull him further out of alignment.

So I showed him a new way—one that flows with who he is, instead of fighting against it.

Me: What if you didn't need to push shit uphill to reach your ultimate goal? What if… There's a river winding through the mountains — and a canoe waiting for you by the riverbank?” What could this journey look like?”

Rhys: “I’d probably offload the cafes that are draining me and double down on the one café I’m actually proud of and excited about”.

And that’s exactly what he did:

✅ Offloaded the cafés that blocked his flow

✅ Focussed on the café that energised him

✅ Launched a corporate catering service

✅ Increased sales by 400%

✅ Flipped company profits from -5% to +15%

✅ Shaved 30 hours of his average work week.

Most importantly — Rhys has way more time and energy for his friends, family, fiancée, and their first child due later that year.

And although the business is projected to double revenue again this year, Rhys has a realistic plan to shave another 10 hours off his work week to have even more time and freedom for the next chapter of life — fatherhood 💛

Looking back, Rhys was stuck — bouncing between Blocked Clarity and No Clarity:

It started with No Clarity — that existential dread, questioning who he was, what he wanted, and whether he should just walk away entirely.

He was in motion, but going nowhere.

Eventually, he shifted into Blocked Clarity — chasing “more time, money, and freedom,” but without a real plan for how to get there. His goals were vague, his path was foggy, and every step felt heavier than it should.

Then came the most dangerous form of No Clarity — the wrong image. He locked onto a crystal-clear vision that wasn’t actually his. It looked sharp. It looked successful.

But it was someone else’s path. And the more he followed it, the further he drifted from himself — and from flow.

But it wasn’t until he removed the layers of external conditioning and connected with his true nature that he was able to get TRUE Clarity.

So, how do we gain TRUE Clarity?

Not the kind you borrow from books, YouTubers, or "coaches"...

Not the kind that was shaped by our parents, teachers, bosses, and peers.

The kind that is deeply rooted within...

It's always the ambitious overachievers who struggle with this the most.

The ones who are stuck chasing a version of success that isn’t their own that vanishes like a mirage the moment they reach it.

Hopelessly trying to satisfy the unquenchable thirst that only leads to burnout and despair.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

The Flowjo Formula is designed to break that cycle — by stripping away everything that isn’t you, and harnessing what is (Flow + Mojo = Flowjo).

When you stop chasing borrowed visions and start aligning with your true nature — everything begins to shift:

✅ You stop being pulled in every direction.

✅ Tempting distractions lose their power.

✅ Scattered energy turns into focused momentum.

✅ Work starts to feel lighter — even fun 😉

That’s the power of true clarity.

So, how do you find it?

Peel back the layers of conditioning.

Interrogate your beliefs and worldviews through a series of prompts:

  • “I’ll be _________ once _________.”

  • “Unless I _________ I won’t _________.”

  • “If _________ then _________."

Then ask yourself:

  • “WHO’s voice is this?” (parents, teachers, peers, bosses, media, social groups, communities, culture, religion, etc.).

Then ask yourself:

  • “Is it serving me or holding me back?”

Understand how you are uniquely wired.

You’re not dumb, lazy, difficult, or broken — you’re just wired differently.

And until you understand the “HOW” — you’ll keep trying to fit a square peg through a round hole.

ADHD isn’t a flaw — it’s a different operating system. Your “lack of focus” isn't a disorder — it's a mismatch between your external environment and your internal nervous system.

Your biology isn’t a barrier you need to overcome — it’s the blueprint for sustainable success and effortless momentum.

The more you understand the way you're wired, the better you can build around it - and flow with it.

And this isn’t just isolated to ADHD. It could be dyslexia, autism, PTSD, OCD, anxiety, depression, or a multitude of other invisible patterns that shape how you respond to the world.

However you're wired — it needs understanding, not judgement. Compassion, not shame or rejection. Acceptance, not abandonment. Because when you embrace the way you're wired, everything in your life begins to flow.

So ask yourself:

  • What fuels my body? What recharges it? What regulates it?

  • What sends it into fight, flight, freeze — or flow?

  • When does my nervous system feel calm, clear, and steady?

  • And when does it feel overloaded, stressed, and overwhelmed?

  • What kind of tasks pull me into focus, creativity, and flow?

  • And which ones leave me overstimulated, scattered, or empty?

  • Where does dopamine drive momentum?

  • And where does it create chaos?

  • What happens when you ignore your body’s signals?

  • And what shifts when you finally start listening?

Embrace your true nature.

Conduct a biopsy on yourself through a series of tests to create an authentic profile of YOU.

Radical honesty is essential here:

  • What are your core values?

  • What do you actually care about?

  • What are you done compromising on?

  • How are you cognitively wired?

  • What are your personality traits?

  • What are your unique strengths and talents?

  • What are you simply no good at? What things don’t come naturally to you?

  • What gives you a real sense of purpose?

  • Where you don’t just feel accomplished — but fulfilled as you're doing it.

  • What are you truly interested in? Curious of?

  • Passionate about?

  • What pulls you into Flow?

  • What awakens your Mojo?

Follow the energy.

Energy never lies. Tune into your body — not just your thoughts.

  • What ignites you and what depletes you?

  • Where do you feel most alive, focused, and expansive?

  • What activities pull you into flow and leave you energised?

  • Now contrast that with the things that feel heavy, forced, or soul-crushing. Where do you notice tension, dread, or the constant need to push?

Let your energy be your compass.

Learn to trust it.

Learn to build around it.

Give yourself permission to stop doing the things that block your flow — even if you’re good at them.

This is Flowjo in action.

Where your Flow fuses with your mojo.

Where Burnout fades. Momentum builds.

And everything starts to click.

Because when your clarity is rooted in who you are and how you’re wired…

You stop forcing.

You stop overthinking.

And everything finally starts to flow 🦦✨

I was raised by my mother on Arrernte Country in Central Australia. The Arrernte people have been nurturing and sustaining this land for thousands and thousands of years. I acknowledge and apologise for what we foreigners have managed to undo in such a short amount of time. I extend this apology and pay my respects to all First Nations people around the world.

I truly believe that Entrepreneurship can be a powerful catalyst for change and the driver of important social and environmental outcomes. It can equip people with the necessary skills to take control of their futures and create their own pathways to success - in whatever form that looks like.

Whilst I am enthusiastic about entrepreneurship, I acknowledge that it is a Western construct born from the same colonial systems that continue to extract, oppress and cause immense suffering to First Nations people and their land.
